NEW SKILLS UNLOCKED: CULTURAL STUDIES THEORIES AND ANALYSES OF GAMES

Tamara Bodden, Rebecca Bachmann

How do Lego games communicate with us without language? Do we really play God in The Sims, as the advertising promises? What makes historical games authentic, and how does the camera direct our gaze to bodies in video games?

This edited volume explores these and many other questions, thereby revealing connections between game studies and academic perspectives. To this end, it applies theories, methods, and impulses from the humanities and cultural studies, as well as related fields (including linguistics, philosophy, theology, and sociology), to the study of games.

This opens up, on the one hand, a view of the inherent potential of games for communicating academic theories, for example, when they serve as a setting for thought experiments or when the pursuit of goals in "roguelikes" is made plausible through sociological concepts. On the other hand, these specific approaches also make it possible to open up additional interpretive possibilities and to sharpen our understanding of multifaceted phenomena in games and the communities associated with them.

The ten articles are aimed at an interdisciplinary and popular science audience, and, in addition to providing an overview of the game under investigation, introduce the underlying theories and methods.
