APOTHEOSIS OF POPULAR CULTURE: STUDIES ON THE CONSTRUCTION OF POLYTHEISTIC CONCEPTIONS OF GOD IN DIGITAL GAMES

Jan Wysocki

Although we seem to live in a disenchanted world, our everyday lives and media are filled with ideas of gods, goddesses, deities, or similar powerful, extra-human beings.

Statues of the Greek goddess Athena can be found in schools and universities, the Hindu gods Rama or Ganesha are worshipped in home shrines and processions, and people pray to the kami, various Shinto deities, for good luck in their daily lives.

"Apotheosis of Popular Culture" examines how developers of digital games utilize such polytheistic conceptions of God to enrich their game worlds. The three titles "God of War" (2005), "Ōkami" (2006), and "Smite" (2014) are considered as examples. These conceptions of God are adapted to the visual habits of the audience and the needs of digital games. At the same time, such mythically charged conceptions of God also influence and deify elements of popular culture.

The author combines the study of religious studies' investigations into the reception of religious elements with perspectives from game studies. This aims to illustrate how powerful religious imagery remains in our digitally shaped present .
