POSTHUMANISM IN FICTIONAL TEXTS: DEALING WITH THE POSTHUMAN IN I AM YOUR HUMAN AND DETROIT: BECOME HUMAN

Ann-Kathrin Günther

The idea of improving or even transcending humanity has preoccupied humankind for a long time. Early examples of this can be found in the Epic of Gilgamesh, which grapples with mortality and the finiteness of human life. Getting beyond humanity and the image we project onto it is an endeavor to which proponents of critical posthumanism have dedicated themselves. This posthumanism, however, does not constitute a fixed, unified, and scientific theory. Rather, it is a conceptual construct comprised of many elements, all of which attempt to transcend humanity and create a posthuman. What this posthuman will look like usually remains unclear and hidden behind metaphors.

At this point, fictional texts help to paint a clearer picture of such a vision of the future. To illustrate what a posthuman might look like and what added value thought experiments like those of posthumanism can generate, the story "I Am Your Human" and the video game "Detroit: Become Human" are used as examples. Both texts show how our own ideas and fears become blurred in a posthuman world.
