Game studies is an interdisciplinary academic field that examines games and players, along with their social and cultural contexts. Video game studies is a subfield of game studies which—whether we use terms like video games, home/handheld console games, mobile games, computer games, arcade games, digital games, or (to a lesser extent) electronic and interactive games—focuses on games primarily based on computer technology.

Beyond being made for play, video games almost always “say” something: they act as a communication channel for messages and meaning. They entertain us, but also shape our awareness of the world we live in, reinforce (or participate in) systems of values and ideas, and position the individual as a subject—assigning roles through avatars not only inside the game. In that indirect way, they can teach what it means to be a man or a woman, Black, Chinese, or white, a knight, a detective, a criminal, a soldier, and so on. People connect and socialize through games, and the virtual world is not a “fake” world, but one full of potential—matching the meaning of “virtual,” from the Latin virtualis, referring to possibility or a capacity for realization.
