Let's talk about a media leviathan: In 2020, digital games generated sales of around 8.5 billion euros in Germany. More than 34 million people play regularly in this country. At the latest since the turn of the millennium, an increasingly institutionalized research direction has been taking on the subject of digital games: Game Studies. But the academic discourse on games is stagnating in Germany. While practical training, such as game design, is expanding, explicit contact points for digital, theoretically-based and meaningful game research are few and far between. Committed lighthouse and mid-level projects (still) determine the picture. But is becoming a discipline really the decisive level boss?
