UNDERRATED VIDEO GAMES, CRITICISM & VIDEO GAME RESEARCH – GEKIGEMU HON VOL. 3

Luca "koma" Taborelli

Since the 1980s and 1990s, many enthusiasts have discovered and deepened their love of video games through magazines, websites, online forums, blogs, and social media. In some cases, they realized that there were other games beyond those everyone was talking about. These are titles dismissed and underrated by gaming influencers and journalists, but when played outside the trends of the moment, they can offer fascinating and distinctive gameplay, stories, characters, and styles.

At that point, questions arise: Is objectivity possible in video game reviews or opinions? Who is right: journalists, influencers, or enthusiasts? After all, our relationship with video games changes over time. Have you ever lost interest in video games and abandoned them after just a few hours? Are you too old to play games, are all games the same, or do you simply no longer enjoy video games? Perhaps you have fallen into a state of gaming apathy. Maybe you just need to play something different from your usual choices, or simply learn a different, more empathetic way of talking about games.

These are the stories that continue the journey into the depths of video games and their audiences in the third volume of Gekigemu Hon: Underrated Video Games, Criticism & Video Game Research.

If this book has caught your interest, I imagine you have already read the other volumes of Gekigemu Hon. However, the articles in these pages are not directly connected to the other books. In other words, feel free to start reading in whichever order you prefer.

By the autumn of 2022, six years had passed since the Gekigemu project began. This third volume brings together video game research conducted between October 2020 and September 2022. It is a way to preserve in physical form all the niche video games, fascinating creators, and curious stories I shared during my two years of work on YouTube.

Topics covered in this book include the most interesting Nintendo DS and 3DS games that remained exclusive to Japan; customization and accessibility options in the video games of the future; how our relationship with video games changes as we grow older; the history and games of Human Entertainment (Clock Tower, Twilight Syndrome, Mizzurna Falls, Remote Control Dandy, and Monster Party); Shoji Masuda (Tengai Makyo, Linda Cube, and Oreshika); Kiyoshi Sakai (Umihara Kawase); the PoPoLoCRoIS series; empathy in public discourse about video games; and how to research and explore hundreds of other curious but forgotten games for consoles and PC.

I hope that, through this book, you will rediscover all the passion and curiosity that come from discovering, exploring, and sharing new games, characters, and stories hidden within the fascinating world of video games.
