STRANGE, RARE & FORGOTTEN VIDEO GAMES – GEKIGEMU HON VOL. 1
Luca "koma" Taborelli
Video games have now become a very popular form of entertainment worldwide, and perhaps even a form of art. However, many strange and original video games remain forgotten and underestimated by most players. They are rare gems hidden among the sea of famous games, released for consoles and PC, which over the years can become expensive and highly sought after by collectors.
But who develops these video games that everyone has forgotten? These are the stories told in the first volume of Gekigemu Hon: Strange, Rare & Forgotten Video Games.
If you have this book in your hands, you may already be familiar with the Gekigemu project. If not, I think it is only fair to introduce myself before you begin reading.
My name is Luca, although online people usually call me “koma.” I published my first website online in 1998 on GeoCities, and naturally, it was an independent page dedicated to video games.
Since 2016, I have been publishing a series of video essays on YouTube dedicated to forgotten video games (and alternative manga). This book is a textual collection of all the scripts and research I wrote during the first two years of the project.
Among the many subjects I have discussed in Gekigemu videos and in the articles in this book are Artdink and its original games; the social zeitgeist of Undertale; the dreamlike imagery of Suda51 in the Kill the Past series; the hidden connections between Shigesato Itoi (the creator of Mother / EarthBound), penguins, and alternative manga from the early 1960s; the history and style of Love-de-Lic; the secrets of developing video games while living in trees; the truth about Final Fantasy VII for the Nintendo 64; and hundreds of interesting console and PC games that remain unknown to many enthusiasts.
Gekigemu (“dramatic games”) is a Japanese neologism I invented, inspired by the Gekiga movement (“dramatic pictures”), a form of alternative manga that began in Japan in the late 1950s. Gekiga artists wanted to explore manga as an art form in greater depth, appealing to a more mature audience. They coined this new term to distinguish their work from less serious manga, which was primarily aimed at children.
I hope that, through this book, you will rediscover all the passion and curiosity that come from discovering and exploring new games, characters, and stories hidden within the fascinating world of video games.
