JAPANESE, ESOTERIC & INDIE VIDEO GAMES – GEKIGEMU HON VOL. 2

Beyond indie games, there are many original, esoteric, and surprising video games for consoles and PC that remain forgotten and underrated by most players, websites, magazines, and influencers. They are true misunderstood “hidden gems,” created by eccentric Japanese developers or by Western creators influenced by the Japanese video games they played as children. Some of these creators are reasonably well known among enthusiasts, yet little is known about their biographies or the philosophies behind their outward personas.

These are the stories that continue the dark journey into the depths of forgotten games in the second volume of Gekigemu Hon: Japanese, Esoteric & Indie Video Games.

If this book has caught your interest, I imagine you have already picked up the first volume of Gekigemu Hon. However, the articles in these pages are not directly connected to the previous volume. In other words, feel free to start reading in whichever order you prefer.

By the autumn of 2020, four years had passed since the Gekigemu project began. This second volume brings together video game research conducted between October 2018 and September 2020. It is a way to preserve in physical form all the niche video games, fascinating creators, and curious stories I shared during my two years of work on YouTube.

Topics covered in this book include the most interesting original PlayStation games that remained exclusive to Japan; the biography and philosophy of Keita Takahashi (the creator of Katamari Damacy and Wattam); the mystery surrounding Quintet's disappearance following the success of its 16-bit RPGs; the truth behind Yoko Taro's mask; unconventional advice on how not to develop independent video games; the musical esotericism of Osamu Sato; Swery65's love of cinema and filmmaking; the strategic waifus of Sakura Wars; and hundreds of other curious but forgotten video games for consoles and PC.

I hope that, through this book, you will rediscover all the passion and curiosity that come from discovering, exploring, and sharing new games, characters, and stories hidden within the fascinating world of video games.
