THE HISTORY OF THE NINTENDO 64: THE MOST AMERICAN OF JAPANESE CONSOLES

Patrick Hellio

After having completely dominated the video game industry with the NES and the Super Nintendo, the Japanese company Nintendo found itself facing strong competition, materialized by the Sony PlayStation. With its next console, the Nintendo 64, the Japanese manufacturer decided to open up to modernity, by collaborating with the largest computer-generated image companies in Hollywood, while retaining some anachronisms with the maintenance of support cartridge, preferred to CD-Rom. A single objective: to revolutionize the approach to 3D in video games!

This part of Nintendo's history is revisited here, returning to an atypical console undermined by the PlayStation, but which will have hosted some of the most legendary games in the video game landscape (Super Mario 64, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, etc.).
