Sound and music have become integral components of nearly every modern video game. Music serves multiple purposes: it frames the game environment while also infusing the virtual space with the intention of creating specific atmospheres.
Behind the term "game music" lies an entire industry that encompasses everything from commercially available soundtracks to live concerts. Music is a pivotal and deliberately employed medium within video games. Much like film music, game music is designed to evoke particular emotions in the player. However, unlike film music, game music doesn't adhere to a predetermined, unchanging pattern dictated by the passage of time; instead, it is (co-)shaped by the player's involvement and the variable progression of the game.
This thesis delves into an exploration and classification of the potential functions of music in video games through carefully selected case studies. Subsequent chapters delve into adaptivity and interactivity, the role of music in first-person shooters, music's connection to narrative, the integration of musicians within games, and the concept of performativity. The study investigates how music contributes to immersion and heightens the intensity of gameplay, while also analyzing how music can reciprocally influence player behavior.
