PLAY ERGO SUM: AN ANALYSIS OF VIDEO GAMES IN FICTION, IDENTITY AND ENGAGEMENT

Manuel Maximilian Riolo

Video games have often been scrutinized, accused of various crimes. They have been suspected of sealing the younger generation in a fictitious and alienating world, creating dependencies, desensitizing us to violence, and rendering us passive. This book brings us back to reality, dispelling absurd images born of mere ignorance. It encourages us to consider video games for what they truly are: a form of entertainment, a means of cultural expression, and a work of art. It achieves this by measuring video games against the great anthropologies of play from the 20th century to discover their uniqueness compared to other ludic activities that engage people of all ages.

Among other things, this approach allows for a new classification of video games based on the ways and degrees of imaginative participation of players. This valuable book clarifies the aesthetic and moral aspects of activities that involve an ever-expanding portion of the global population.
