Philip Dietrich

Video games have long since transcended mere entertainment. As interactive and intergenerational media, they open up new possibilities not only for representing socially relevant topics but also for making them actively tangible. The combination of interaction and narration opens up innovative approaches for digital educational offerings.

"Moral Decisions in Virtual Worlds " examines the conditions under which digital games can become effective as sites for moral reflection, political education, and social negotiation. Based on the current state of research on learning through play, the author demonstrates how digital games build upon established game functions and expand them through their interactive, narrative, and aesthetic possibilities. Against this backdrop, game studies are introduced as an interdisciplinary field of research, and digital games are conceptualized as spaces for moral negotiation.

Based on four of the author's own sub-studies, the book then shows the conditions under which digital games can responsibly convey topics such as the culture of remembrance or sustainability. The focus is on the connection between narration and interaction, which empowers players to shift perspectives, assume roles, and act morally.

This book is aimed at researchers, teachers, students, as well as developers and educational practitioners who want to learn about digital games not only as entertainment, but as an effective medium for cultural communication.
