"I'LL REMEMBER THIS": FUNCTION, STAGING, AND EVOLUTION OF DECISIONS IN VIDEO GAMES

In contrast to economically optimized decisions, where the goal was to find the 'right' solution that would be rewarded with maximum ludic or sometimes narrative payoff, the question today might be as simple as "Bacon omelette or Belgian waffle?" – and that's only in the best case scenario: Players are now demanded to make moral decisions, they are put under (time) pressure, confronted with (moral) dilemmas, and are rewarded for their efforts with a colorful array of different horrors presented as consequences of their decisions.

Do games still remain fun this way? Or do they gain depth because they suddenly address existential problems and involve players in a unique way? The contributions in "I'll Remember This" aim to provide answers to such questions by shedding light on the what, how, and why of decisions in contemporary video games.
