A fascinating journey into the unique world of the Amstrad CPC. Games, machines, advertisements, accessories... For its 40th anniversary, relive the incredible adventure of the CPC in this richly illustrated and documented book!
Forty years ago, the British manufacturer Amstrad launched its very first microcomputer, the CPC 464. These three letters, standing for "Colour Personal Computer," still resonate today, particularly in France, where the Amstrad line of machines achieved phenomenal success. Designed as a pragmatic and economical system by a champion of affordable hi-fi, the CPC quickly stood out from the competition with its aggressive price and, above all, its visionary "all-in-one" design, making the microcomputer easier to use. Affordable, competitive, and robust, the machine designed across the Channel boasted key advantages, cleverly promoted through the manufacturer's loud advertising. But the CPC was much more than that...
Notably contributing to the democratization of personal computers, especially in France, the machine often found its place in the corner of a bedroom with a dedicated screen. Designed by Alan Sugar's team, the Amstrad 8-bit computer marked an entire generation. In the mid-1980s, the unique trajectory of this product represented the dawn of a new era for the emerging family computer sector.
With its iconic crocodile mascot and remarkably widespread presence at the time, the CPC family helped bring computing—and, of course, video gaming—into the public eye.
Looking back at the history and creation of these computers, the studios that fed their software libraries, and the specialized press inspired by the Amstrad phenomenon takes us to a pivotal moment, between 1984 and the early 90s, at the heart of the evolution of personal computing and computer gaming. From its origins to its legacy, this book chronicles the Amstrad years, the story of the CPC generation.
