It's impossible to discuss aesthetics in video games without considering them within a broader theory of art. For the past few years, the debate about whether video games can be considered works of art has been ongoing, with conflicting opinions. A work of art is contemplated by a viewer; a game requires a response or interaction that changes its state. But video games cater to both extremes, since the player doesn't just engage in the role for pure leisure and entertainment, but is also a spectator of incredible worlds and moving stories with endearing and complex characters. One part of the player executes actions to advance the game according to its rules, while another part contemplates and marvels, experiencing a journey, a transformation resulting from the impact the game has had on them as a spectator. Following the rise of independent video games, new artists, working outside the mainstream market, are highlighting this relationship between these two roles in their productions. Games are no longer designed solely for an executor of actions, but also for a contemplative spectator. The aim is to tell stories and, through them, to unsettle, captivate, excite, and impress.
This manual explores the aesthetic aspects of great games, both past and present, examining how these have evolved over time, adapting to new audiences and markets, as well as the perspectives of artists, gamers, developers, and players.
