What happens when a community of strangers builds a world together — and what does that world reveal about who they are?
Tower United is an ethnographic study of Tower Unite, a small but extraordinary multiplayer game where players gather not to compete, but to exist alongside one another. Over three years and more than 2,000 hours of immersive fieldwork, the author embedded themselves in this community — attending funerals held in virtual apartments, watching musicians perform to crowds of avatars, and documenting the quiet, remarkable ways people construct identity, belonging, and meaning in digital space.
Drawing on the work of Goffman, Oldenburg, and the tradition of virtual ethnography, this book argues that Tower Unite is not merely a game. It is a third space — a laboratory for the self, a canvas for creativity, and a theatre for human emotion in its full, complicated range.
Small in numbers. Vast in depth. Unmistakably human.
