THE GOLDEN AGE OF VIDEO GAMES IN WALLONIA: FROM THE PRE-OUTCAST ERA TO THE GP32: 1984–2004
Michi-Hiro Tamai
Evoking a golden age of Walloon video games sometimes sparks disbelief and curiosity. After all, at first glance, the southern part of Belgium cannot compete with the history of the gaming industry in its British and French neighbors.
Yet between 1988 and 2004, thirteen games, created in places including Fosses-la-Ville, Liège, Jambes, and Jemappes, crossed the country’s borders and gradually made their way to Europe, the United States, and even arcade halls in Japan. They were distributed by renowned publishers such as Ubi Soft, Psygnosis, Infogrames, and Banpresto.
From the romantic imagery of Agony on the Amiga to the forgotten Blue Angelo on the GP32, this odyssey reached its zenith with the open-world game Outcast on PC.
Artificial intelligence (praised by Crytek), exotic voxel-based 3D graphics (applauded by Blizzard), pioneering motion capture, and the development of a motherboard for arcade machines: the sheer variety of creative tools that Ordilagic, Art & Magic, Appeal, and Virtual Spaghetti developed for their respective titles is staggering.
What is it like to grow up with two lions in your garden? What was the atmosphere like in Moscow just after the fall of the Berlin Wall? Why was Sega’s arcade division interested in Ultimate Tennis?
Richly illustrated and filled with firsthand accounts, this book does more than chronicle the games in question. It answers these unusual questions, along with others concerning artistic, economic, human, geopolitical, political, and gender-related issues.
From Franck Sauer and Yves Grolet to the Baglio brothers, with Deltatec along the way, we witness the foundations of a new industry. We see the emergence of a generation of rock-star creators who graced the covers of magazines such as Tilt, Génération 4, and Joystick.
We also witness the rise of Walloon studios and the birth of cultural icons.
All of this undoubtedly makes a compelling case for calling it a golden age.
