Standard Edition First Print Edition
When Life Is Strange debuted in 2015, the story of Max and Chloe brought a refreshing change to a video game landscape dominated by traditionally masculine imagery. Inspired by the aesthetics of American independent cinema, the game stood out for its portrayal of desexualized and queer female characters dealing with mental health struggles.
Originally conceived as an anthology, Life Is Strange gradually evolved into a franchise, adopting some of the conventions of blockbuster entertainment. In the process, the toxic nostalgia criticized by the first game began to affect the series itself, while the transition from Don't Nod to Deck Nine Games proved far from seamless.
Drawing on exclusive interviews with Life Is Strange co-creators Jean-Luc Cano, Michel Koch, and Raoul Barbet, author Léon Cattan examines what made the series—especially its earliest entries—so meaningful to thousands of players.
