Thomas Morisset
As a player, it is not uncommon to exclaim during a video game: "This is beautiful!" Some of these experiences are not fundamentally different from those encountered with traditional objects of aesthetics, while others present sensitive and attentional characteristics that resist the traditional philosophical approach to understanding aesthetic experience.
Starting from this perspective, this book aims to account for the sensory richness and heterogeneous nature of the video game experience. It suggests that some of our exclamations express a technical beauty rooted in our playful efforts. Thus, through video games and other practices, it hopes to show – on a broader philosophical level – that our aesthetic judgment is complemented by another faculty that is expressed through judgments of technical sensory appreciation. In doing so, it attempts to prove the great necessity for culture in general to cultivate this second faculty.
