Audiovisual narratives, including video games, often lack a critical gender perspective and strong female role models that reflect the full diversity of women and their experiences. Although representation of heroines has improved, many stories still perpetuate stereotypes and marginalize women’s voices, making it harder for female players and audiences to fully identify with characters.

This collective volume addresses that gap by analyzing the heroine’s journey in video games through Joseph Campbell’s monomyth, reframed from a gender perspective. It features 13 chapters written by academic researchers, each focusing on a different female character who embodies key aspects of the heroine’s path.

The book highlights how game narratives, traditionally dominated by male heroes, are evolving to include female protagonists who follow the monomyth while also reflecting the complexities of gender. Through these 13 examples, the work challenges gender conventions in gaming stories and emphasizes the importance of building more inclusive, diverse, and representative narratives for today’s world.
