The second volume of PIXEL continues the project’s mission by giving space to fifteen authors who live, narrate, and shape the gaming scene every day. The essays cover a wide range of creative and critical topics, from the representation of the devil in games to the role of women in post-apocalyptic societies.
Industry legends feature prominently: Yoshitaka Amano revisits his artistic career and vision, while Edmund McMillen (Super Meat Boy, The Binding of Isaac) discusses his fascination with the grotesque and how indie development uniquely embraced it. Present-day innovators also take the stage: Sandfall Interactive (Clair Obscure: Expedition 33) and Studio Zero of Atlus (Metaphor: ReFantazio) provide detailed looks at their RPG design choices. Meanwhile, Christian Cantamessa and Davide Soliani (co-founders of Day 4 Night) reflect on an industry often resistant to celebrating individual voices.
Like its predecessor, PIXEL.02 pairs each article with artwork, this time spotlighting global talent. From NO CURVES’ tape art to striking digital illustrations by Plastiboo, Ori Toor, Sibilla Pepi, and Sony Wicaksana, the collection showcases a rich variety of styles and interpretations.
The cover art is an exclusive by Peach Momoko, the world-renowned artist known for her collaborations with Marvel and Wizards of the Coast. Her watercolor blends influences from Japanese cinema, tattoo art, and Studio Ghibli, portraying a porcelain-like face disrupted by a curious fairy—a macabre yet seductive prelude to the book’s deep explorations of video game storytelling.
