If it’s fair to say that without the chicken there would be no egg, we can also say that without a gorilla there would be no plumber. Nintendo’s most famous character, Mario, didn’t even have a name when he first appeared in a video game. He was simply called Jumpman, and the game was Donkey Kong, one of the biggest successes in arcade history.
Over time, Donkey Kong went from villain to hero and starred in numerous games across different genres, firmly securing his place among the greatest video game characters. But the ape isn’t alone in this volume of Nintendo All-Stars, as two other famous Nintendo franchises are also celebrated here.
F-Zero has been somewhat sidelined by Nintendo in recent years (its most recent release dates back to 2004), but with so many outstanding and groundbreaking titles, especially the original on the Super NES, the futuristic racing genre wouldn’t be the same without Captain Falcon and his rivals.
And to finish with a nostalgic punch, we revisit the journey of Little Mac, the protagonist of Punch-Out!!, a boxing series that began in arcades and made its way across several home systems, even featuring former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
