After a grueling summer, the JV editorial team decided that a little positivity could do everyone some good, helping us head into autumn with a smile and a bit of cheer. And so, here comes JV No. 118, with its theme: “Death and Video Games.”
Despite the somewhat gloomy title, this is actually the latest edition of our new 168-page quarterly magazine, packed with content exploring the relationship between death and video games.
Contents:
THEME: “Death and Video Games”: A 60-page section featuring nearly 15 articles exploring the grim subject from every angle. It begins with “Game Over,” an inseparable part of video game language. An essential convention or blatant ludonarrative dissonance? Beyond these fascinating game design questions, the section also tackles lighter topics: games that explore grief, how to technically make a corpse disappear (in a game, of course!), and what happens to our Steam library after we die. Add portraits, analyses, and interviews, and you have a truly killer theme section.
OPEN WORLD: A series of articles examining contemporary video game culture from a broad, reflective, and subjective perspective. This issue covers gamescom 2026, Australia’s vibrant game scene, the Molleindustria movement, the many lives of the MOBA Paragon, and much more.
REVIEW SECTION: Reviews of the most significant recent releases, from Resonance: A Plague Tale Legacy to Big Walk, as well as Denshattack! and Onimusha: Way of the Sword.
TRY AGAIN: A look back at video game history from both rigorously historical and deeply personal perspectives. Issue 118 features Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, Ace Combat, The 7th Guest, and Helen’s Mysterious Castle, along with an extensive feature on French publisher Froggy Software.
