IF I DON'T SHOOT, WHAT DO I DO? WHAT NEUROSCIENCE REALLY SAYS ABOUT VIOLENCE IN VIDEO GAMES
Alice Gobbi
I’ve been gaming since I was six, and I work by deliberately breaking games, looking for where things fail before players find them.
One day, I turned that lens toward the question I’ve been asked since childhood: does playing this make you violent?
I dug into nearly three decades of research on video games and violence. What I found was poorly designed testing, not ideology. A measurement tool with 157 different ways of calculating the same result. One study in which Tetris, with the controls intentionally made difficult to use, produced more aggressive thinking than a shooter.
This book is the report of those tests. And, above all, it’s about what exists on the other side of the gun, a subject far bigger and deeper than you might imagine.
