GAMING 2.0: SERVICE-GAMES AND PLATFORMS BETWEEN WORK AND PLAY

Harald Waldrich

Video games have long since become more than mere entertainment. As global platforms, social spaces, and economic systems, they increasingly shape the structure of digital societies. At the same time, digitalization has brought about a fundamental transformation that increasingly calls into question traditional distinctions between work and play.

Gaming 2.0 examines this transformation using the examples of service games and streaming platforms. The central question is how new practices emerge in networked gaming environments, where playing and working merge. Phenomena such as gamification, workification, and playbour are not marginal phenomena, but rather central dynamics of contemporary digital cultures.

Based on media and cultural studies approaches—in particular dispositif analysis and actor-network theory—this study analyzes the complex interconnections between platforms, technologies, and actors. It demonstrates how new forms of value creation, subjectivation, and power emerge within these constellations. Using concrete examples such as Twitch, YouTube, and Fortnite, the study reveals how service games become open, dynamic systems that continuously evolve and address their users simultaneously as players, producers, and economic actors.

Gaming 2.0 thus not only provides an analysis of current gaming culture, but also opens up a further perspective on the logic of digital capitalism as a whole — as a system in which work and play are increasingly indistinguishable.
