Part of the Displacements collection, the book presents video games from a cultural and economic perspective. It spans from the earliest experiments in the 1960s in laboratories at MIT in the United States, with the pioneering game Spacewar!, through the global popularization of video games in the 1980s (driven by companies such as the American Atari), to the emergence of major game developers like Nintendo and Sony in the 1990s, and the expansion of games across different formats, devices, and platforms, including handhelds, computers, and today’s online networked games.
Moving on to the production of augmented reality and virtual reality games, the book examines how video games, through changes in storytelling, plots, graphics, and the possibilities of “multiplayer platforms”, have impacted narrative forms.
