Eduardo Graells-Garrido
Ever since they were invented, games have been an integral part of our lives. They have traveled alongside us, shared important moments, been there during both our times of company and solitude. "Game Over" is a collection of stories that remind us of the good, the bad, and the useful lessons games have bestowed upon us: teachings, life experiences, and, why not, even traumas.
The author explores how games and virtuality have interacted with reality: interpersonal relationships, lifestyles, personal development, work, and even illnesses. He portrays the decay, the dirt, the intolerance, the discrimination; everything that isn't a game but rather real life. Or perhaps, is life just a game?
In each story, we discover the power games have over our lives: the writer takes us on a fast-paced journey through Chile's popular arcades, where competition and socialization thrived; he makes us remember innocent games like flying a kite; then, he places us on a chessboard, where we are pieces, but not made of wood, but of flesh and bone, fighting for checkmate. He shows us how far we are willing to endure in the game out of economic necessity or, conversely, out of greed. He makes us question whether the game is a part of life or if life is a part of the game. In the end, there may or may not be a reset button.
