CONVERGING NARRATIVES: LITERATURES AND VIDEO GAMES
Ricardo Maciel dos Anjos
In the final decades of the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st, video games established themselves as a new, broad, and significant form of artistic expression, capable of stimulating the imagination and telling stories in different ways thanks to their inherently interactive nature. Although they differ in their narrative structures and in how they relate to their audiences (reader or player), literature and video games increasingly demonstrate interaction with one another, not only through direct adaptations but also through inventive dialogues.
In this innovative book, which is the result of academic and creative research on the subject, Ricardo Maciel dos Anjos draws on concepts and theories from comparative literature, intermediality, and narratology to compare literary works with video games based on them, as well as video games with literary works written from them. The book examines the different forms of intersection between these media, as well as the various aspects involved in the creative processes of both.
It thus represents a valuable contribution to the still-emerging field of research in Brazil concerning the reciprocal influences between literature and video games.
