COMMUNALIZATION IN MMORPGs

Rudolf Thomas Inderst

Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games (MMORPGs) stand as one of the most triumphant computer game genres. Countless individuals across various age groups embark on journeys into the fantastical digital realms of games like "World of Warcraft" and "Lord of the Rings Online," immersing themselves in time-intensive adventures and challenges through personally crafted avatars.

Nonetheless, these quests are seldom solitary endeavors. Within these game worlds, organized groups of players, commonly known as guilds, rapidly form and consolidate. These guilds collaboratively tackle and conquer the in-game tasks, showcasing a remarkable ability to unite.

This study zeroes in on these guilds. Rooted in the notion that player guilds in MMORPGs strive to establish optimal communities for individual players, the author explores an array of utopianization strategies. These strategies are prominently seen within the realms of alternative capital as per Pierre Bourdieu's concepts and the economic framework of a gift economy.
