There is a close connection between computer games and the Cold War. Not only did the medium’s technological foundations emerge from technologies developed during the conflict between the two political systems, but from its earliest days, this form of entertainment also had something to say about what the Cold War was and what it meant.
Through a series of exemplary analyses, this study examines how computer games made their own medium-specific contribution to the construction of the Cold War within the historical context of the final phase of the conflict. In doing so, they served as translators of specialized Cold War knowledge into popular culture and navigated the discursive boundary between simulation and play.
The study thus contributes to our understanding of computer games as sources for cultural history.
