BIOSHOCK AND THE SOUL OF AMERICA

Alberto Venegas Ramos

The BioShock trilogy of video games is a beacon that many of us look to so as not to get lost. A beam of light from which we can observe a city so rich, so detailed and complex that it could become real were it not for the fact that it is at the bottom of the ocean or in the middle of the sky. BioShock is, for many, one of the best sagas of the first two decades of the 21st century.

BioShock and the soul of the United States presents a journey through the history of the franchise and that of all its protagonists. Within the work of Irrational Games hides the soul of the United States. Hidden in it are the deepest and most deeply rooted values, ideals and myths of this country: freedom, exceptionality and courage. But also its reverses: racism, inequality and fundamentalism. Within the walls and tunnels of Rapture not only lurk giants, iron men and violent addicts, but also the danger of the lack of limits and rules within a society. Not only do metal birds hide in the clouds of Columbia ready to kill us to save their little girl, there is also the danger of racism, exacerbated nationalism and religious fundamentalism.

BioShock and the studio that breathed life into it knew how to create a world, so real and so fantastic at the same time, that forced us to look at ourselves while we saved or were saved by the Little Sisters or by Elizabeth.
