WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME?: THE CULTURE OF COMPUTER GAMES

Mark Butler

WOULD YOU LIKE TO PLAY A GAME? is an invitation to dive into the world beyond the mirror, to slip down the rabbit hole, into the techno-imaginary wonderland of computer games. The journey leads from the interactive sign systems of virtual reality, via the player's minotaur body, to the rivers, depths and phantasms of cyberspace. Here other, supposedly more serious activities are touched on: economic planning and warfare are just a few of the spheres that are closely linked to frivolous computer games and the Ikarus flight to which it invites.

In the light of the global triumph of popular computer game culture, the question of the benefits and disadvantages of computer games in life arises. This book is the result of an ethnographic study and the author's critical examination of his own passion for gaming. Nine players report on their individual use of the information society's favorite toy. The respective gaming experiences and their fascination are addressed within the framework of the technical structure that enables them. Game situations and developments on the market are presented as well as a theoretical offer for understanding the psycho- and somadynamics of computer games. This book is intended for avid long-time gamers and beginners, game designers and humanities scholars, as well as to inexperienced educators and concerned parents. It offers food for thought for those who know many other stories from the sprawling playgrounds of networked computing machines, as well as an introduction to the simulated realities for those who prefer to read books, watch films or pursue other media preferences in their free time.
