In contrast to more "traditional" media, which primarily facilitate a one-way flow of information from creators to audiences and back, video games operate as dynamic systems enabling multi-directional exchanges. These interactions can occur between the gaming platform and the player, or among players themselves, all within the framework of the game system. Notably, video games consist of both hardware and software components, extending beyond the mere storage and transmission of data. A significant portion of this information is actively interpreted and processed to determine how player actions impact the system's state.


Given these intricate dynamics, the concept of a "videogame language" transcends the complexities of other forms of media, such as cinema or literature. Yet, defining and comprehending it remains a formidable challenge, not only due to the inherent intricacies of video games but also because interactive digital media are relatively recent developments. Consequently, there's ample room for continued research and understanding.


This work plays a pivotal role in this context, presenting a collection of diverse research papers that offer various perspectives. These viewpoints encompass not only narratology and literature but also the idea of video games as generators of profound experiences and their connections to cultural elements like myths and religion. Each contribution represents a distinct approach to the fundamental question: "What is the language of video games?" While there may be multiple valid answers, these diverse angles are essential for constructing a more comprehensive understanding and expanding our criteria.
