LUDOTHEQUE #17 - EARTHBOUND

Laure Trintignant

Whether perceived as a bizarre game, as a parody of our society and RPG clichés, or even as a poignant work that promotes family and friendship ties, EarthBound (or MOTHER 2 in Japan) can be the object of multiple interpretations due to the many themes it addresses.

Its creator, Shigesato Itoi, says that we complete the design of a video game when we forge our own experience while playing it and when we relate our feelings. He then compares the series MOTHER to a universe that a child would shape by collecting his innumerable finds, and that each of his friends would complete in his own way by using these objects. As if to better support this point, he is also evasive as to the hypothetical links that would unite the three episodes.

Thus, after tracing its development and its American location, it will be a question here of exposing an interpretation of EarthBound among others by seeking to explain how it constitutes a resolutely human game.
