THE USE OF COLOR IN VIDEO GAMES

Emiliano Labrador

Color is a fascinating thing. And video games too. Together, they manage to make us live memorable experiences that elevate this entertainment medium to the category of art. However, despite the fact that it is one of the most powerful sources of information available to the human being, color is a great unknown.

Today there are physical and biological processes that are well known about color perception, but there are others that still hold mysteries for science. And if the perception of color is something so complex, its use is no less so. We might think that the color serves to improve the aesthetics of the video game, but that is only the tip of the iceberg. Color is useful to improve game design, the learning curve, usability, to regulate difficulty, and in general, it influences all the processes that increase playability. Furthermore, color serves to identify an era, it helps to modify our emotions, to identify us with genders and even to define gender roles.

This book takes a tour of all the necessary aspects to understand what color is, how it should be used and how we can examine whether the color of a video game (our own or that we want to analyze) is used properly.
