THE HISTORY OF FROMSOFTWARE: FROM KING'S FIELD TO ELDEN RING

Millions of players around the world eagerly throw themselves into the suffocating depths of Dark Souls or Elden Ring—games that can seem so unwelcoming at first glance, yet are masterpieces that sparked FromSoftware’s late-blooming fame. Where did that achievement come from?
The book argues that FromSoftware’s philosophy expresses itself through the regeneration of cycles. Instead of following the usual rules of long-running series, its games “die” and are “reborn,” each time slightly different. The archetype of King's Field gives rise to a darker offshoot in Shadow Tower; the “black miracle” of Dark Souls later produces the twisted nightmare of Bloodborne and, later still, the seemingly endless journey of Elden Ring. The apocalyptic Armored Core saga also moves through eras via generational restarts. Guided by variation, the studio’s catalog becomes a family of “cousin” games, where modern titles can be read as updated versions of older recipes rooted in early RPG forms.
It also emphasizes that FromSoftware’s story is written not only through its games and developers, but through the players who experienced them and carry those memories—so this work doesn’t just retell an industrial history; it also goes out to meet the games, and especially the people who received them.
