THE ENEMY WITHIN: PARASITE EVE AND MITOCHONDRIAL EVOLUTION

Ramón Méndez González

Parasite Eve began as a science-horror novel by Hideaki Sena that became famous in Japan and is considered a key work in the late-20th-century revival of Japanese horror, alongside titles like The Ring. It didn’t gain major international recognition until 1998, when Squaresoft assembled top talent—Hironobu Sakaguchi, Tetsuya Nomura, Yoko Shimomura, among others—to create a distinctive video game. Rather than a strict sequel, the game is a loose continuation that blends cinematic storytelling with RPG elements and survival horror—an ambitious mix that nonetheless became a standout title from the company’s golden era. Through its plot (mitochondria taking control of living beings and causing grotesque mutations) and the psychology of its protagonist, Aya Brea, it explores themes like scientific experimentation, loss, identity, and survival. Its success led to two sequels, the novel’s arrival in the West, and a film adaptation.

This book analyzes every entry in the Parasite Eve saga, unpacking its symbols and key ideas, and it also includes short stories inspired by that universe.
