As a complex cultural and artistic artifact, the video game goes far beyond the idea of play as a toy—or even as a behavior—to offer experiences that reflect the culture and context in which they are created and consumed. Playing Discomfort proposes an approach to games that highlight experiences tied to contemporary issues. Here, we explore realities produced by neoliberalism in our societies, the importance of building community, care, and emotions. We observe how games call us to reflect on our responsibility toward our environment and vulnerable species, and how they let us explore deeply human conditions such as fear, loneliness, or love. They also confront us with the inexplicable nature of death.
Through examinations of mechanics, narrative, and aesthetics, we open ourselves to readings that emphasize subjectivity and the human condition—reaffirming video games as humanistic artifacts.
