ILLNESS IN DIGITAL GAMES: INTERDISCIPLINARY CONSIDERATIONS

Arno Görgen, Stefan Heinrich Simond

Illness in digital games has many facets - whether psychological or somatic. Their representation is based on processes that take up social knowledge about diseases and change them according to the inherent logic of digital games. Aesthetics, narration and game mechanics thus participate in struggles for interpretation sovereignty between the handing down of stigmatizing ideas of illness on the one hand and self-reflective empowerment on the other. The contributors to this first anthology on the subject address theoretical, analytical and practical questions relating to the variety of meanings of disease constructions in digital games from an interdisciplinary perspective.
