HERE BE (DUNGEONS AND) DRAGONS: MAP, WORLD AND ACTION IN THE COMPUTER GAME

One can lose oneself in the extensive digital spaces and worlds of computer games – and probably also get lost. If you want to keep your bearings while exploring such game worlds, you need a map.


As an interactive and non-linear medium, computer games have their own unique ways of dealing with maps. In fact, maps here are often more than guides: they are themselves interactive and intimately intertwined with game mechanics and game objectives — they are part of the gameplay.


Here Be (Dungeons and) Dragons provides an overview of the most common forms of such 'game cards' and examines the integration of card material into computer games with regard to their specific mediality and functional logic. Particular attention is paid to the close connection between map, game world and game action. Using examples and illustrations from a wide range of games, the importance of cards for the medium of computer games is highlighted and what the term 'card' can mean in general.


On the one hand, Here Be (Dungeons and) Dragons is suitable as an introduction to the topic, but at the same time it also offers an overview of the various possibilities and starting points that arise when dealing with space and maps in computer games.
