#GAMERGATE: POLITICS AND GENDER ONLINE

Jöran Lennart Klatt

At the same time as the emerging U.S. presidential campaign of 2016, #GamerGate sparked an online dispute surrounding the world of video games that had a considerable influence on the election outcome. Within #GamerGate, gamers argued about games, gender as a category, independent journalism, and their own identity. Parts of #GamerGate went on to support Donald Trump. #GamerGate and the New Right shared a deep-seated distrust of what they perceived as intrusive feminism and the established media.

The dispute reflected political attitudes and sentiments, particularly in the United States. The New Right draws on individual experiences from the lived realities of various subcultures and increasingly adopts the culture of provocation and transgression originally associated with the political left. This study examines this development and demonstrates how narrative, media practices, and gender politics interacted within #GamerGate.
