GAME OVER: CRITIQUE OF VIDEO GAME REASON

Matteo Bittanti

What happens when video games go off the screen? "Game Over: Critique of Video Game Reason" addresses in a critical and constructive way the most controversial - but paradoxically less-discussed - aspects of contemporary videogame culture, including the identity politics of gamers, the bellicose rhetoric of fanboys, the tactics of trolls, phenomena of racism, sexism and homophobia, the side effects of gamification, the GamerGate campaign and the commodification of gaming in the context of streaming practices, through the contributions of international scholars who are at the intersection of game studies, cultural studies, anthropology and sociology of consumption. The main thesis is that the videogame imagery is dominated by two ideologies: cryptofascism and neoliberalism.
