FROM GRIMM'S FAIRY TALES TO CONTROL: ESSAYS ON THE BORDER BETWEEN GAMES AND LITERATURE

Heidi Rautalahti, Tuukka Hämäläinen

From Grimm's Fairy Tales to Control deals with the multifaceted relationship between digital games and literature - from classics to cult works, from Lovecraft to Dark Souls, and from the Dune books to the Dune game.

Books and games are often contrasted: young people don't read enough and play too much. This artificial juxtaposition ignores the factors that connect books and games.

In the early 2020s, digital games are much more than competition, performances or e-sports. Games have developed into versatile storytelling tools that also draw plenty of influences from literature.

The work sheds light on the relationship between literature and games by examining games based on books or book series. What happens to the stories, characters, worlds and genres of books when they are molded into a new, interactive narrative form?
