The beginning of a new console generation is, at least for passionate gamers like us, something like Easter and Christmas rolled into one, and it deserves to be celebrated accordingly. Ideally, with the release of a new EXP Special.
Welcome to the “World of Nintendo”! In this new EXP special issue, we explore the history of video games in general and Nintendo in particular across more than 160 pages. Above all, however, we celebrate the launch of Nintendo’s latest hybrid console, the “Switch 2.”
Alongside the latest news and information about the Switch 2 and its announced games, including “Mario Kart World,” “Donkey Kong Bananza,” “Metroid Prime 4: Beyond,” and more, a large portion of the “World of Nintendo” special is dedicated to the company’s more than 135-year history.
Beginning with Fusajirō Yamauchi’s founding of Nintendo in Kyoto, Japan, in 1889, the famous Hanafuda playing cards, important Disney licenses, and legendary toys such as Gunpei Yokoi’s Ultra Hand, through to the first electronic games and arcade machines, such as Shigeru Miyamoto’s “Donkey Kong.”
An extensive feature in this issue explores the origins and history of the arcade and video game market, from the earliest experiments on university computers and the first arcade machines to the first video game consoles. It concludes with the great video game crash of 1982, from which Nintendo rose like a phoenix from the ashes with the Famicom (known outside Japan as the NES).
“World of Nintendo” gives you an overview of all Nintendo consoles and handhelds released to date, the most popular game worlds and characters, top-game lists for every platform, film and television adaptations, development studios, key figures, smartphone apps, travel and shopping tips, and much more.
