Electronic sport, e-sport for short, plays an important role in the lives of many young people today: They organize themselves in clans, compete against each other in various disciplines and attend the big tournaments in their hundreds. Despite this, large parts of the public still do not, or hardly, notice him.
"Esports - A Market and Regulatory Economic Analysis" contributes to changing this. With the help of economic instruments, it is examined which forces are currently influencing e-sport and in which directions it can develop in the future. The role of very different groups is examined, including that of the games industry, that of event managers and, last but not least, that of the players themselves. In particular, the importance of the state is questioned: Should the public sector ban or promote electronic sports? And how could such interventions be justified in terms of regulatory economics?
In order to answer such questions, the analysis does not remain in the field of economics, but rather also deals with modern media sports and of course the question of the possible — positive as well as negative — effects of computer games. This book not only describes a youth phenomenon, but also offers orientation in an area that is far too often dominated by populist opinions in the public debate.
