"Great atmosphere!" When discussing player experiences, the focus often shifts to discussing moods. The horror of monsters in the dark, the tension of a firefight, or the melancholy of an abandoned landscape – both the aesthetic offerings of video games and the vocabulary used to describe them are diverse. An increasing number of digital games are prioritizing the creation of evocative situations, pushing traditional rule mechanics into the background.
However, the intense aesthetic relationship between players and games has received little attention in Game Studies – partly because the theoretical foundations for such exploration are still being developed. This anthology serves as an experimental approach to making video games a subject of aesthetic analysis.
Building upon Gernot Böhme's theories of a new aesthetics, authors from various disciplines delve into the atmospheres present in video games. This includes exploring moments of arrival in popular role-playing games, the auditory spaces, the feeling of confinement in underwater worlds, and the ambiance on virtual and physical football fields. In addition to lucid personal experiences, essays, and scholarly analyses, the anthology is enriched with the implicit knowledge of game creators and artists, presented through brief interviews.
