The video game is not just entertainment. It is a medium, a cultural expression, a generator of emotions, worldviews, ideas, and stories. Some even say that game designers have captured the arcane mechanisms of learning.
Video games expand to pedagogy, communication, advertising, the entire iconography of contemporary imagination, art. But can a video game be considered art? With Assassin’s Creed Art (R)Evolution, they want to contribute to this reflection. They have posed the question to those who study art and to those who first became interested in game art.
Assassin’s Creed Art (R)Evolution is the first art catalog entirely dedicated to one of the most beloved and well-known video games in the world. A very particular video game that has made History and Art the heart of its engine, endearing not only players but also critics and scholars.
Art forms of all times come back to life in thousands of concepts that characterize Assassin’s Creed, a multidimensional and multisensory work of art, to be actively experienced by playing or enjoyed as contemporary language.
Since 2007, the year of its first release, Assassin’s Creed has introduced cities of art in Italy such as Venice, Florence, Rome, and historical metropolises like Jerusalem, Constantinople, and Damascus to the world, setting events between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance.
The concept artists and game designers working in 23 studios around the world have brought masterpieces of all times back to life in thousands of artworks, just think of Piranesi's engravings, Leonardo da Vinci's machines, and subjects like Dürer's Venetian Girl, whose model becomes the protagonist's wife in the game.
Five years after the first release, a transformation is announced with the release of a third installment set in America during the War of Independence. The video game thus makes a leap of 250 years from the last Renaissance events of Ezio Auditore, narrated in the second installment, and at the same time is placed 250 years from today, in the genetic reminiscence journey of the protagonist Desmond Miles.
